Yogyakarta
as the center of a kingdom and Javanese culture exists and develops
because of the support of the people. Traditions are preserved
and developed coherently with the instincts, spirit, and need
of the people. It is also affected by the history of the people.
As an enterprise in the city operating in traditional crafts,
Arts and Craft Tjokrosuharto realizes its position to preserve
and develop traditions according to the occurring changes. This
is shown by the existence of this enterprise since its establishment
through the future times. At the moment, this enterprise is
managed by its third generation with some of the fourth generation
already involved. The existence of Tjokrosuharto in history
is an undisputable fact that brakes the myth of family enterprise.
Tjokrosuharto is a successful enterprise in its age and time
since the establishment in the colonial age of the Dutch, Japanese,
in the early independent era up to present time. |

The success of
this family enterprise is not only because of the work and
effort from within the family but also with the support of
craftsmen and the loyalty of the customers. However hard and
solid the family work for the enterprise will not able to
be sustainable without support from craftsmen and suppliers.
The bond with workers and craftsmen has been held through
the generations on the basis of mutual benefit. Trusts of
the customers are the most valuable asset of the enterprise.
It is shown by the strong long lasting relationship with the
customers. The customers’ needs of traditional attributes
are matched with a wide collection.

In
1954, the store was upgraded to the current condition. The address
was preserved as Panembahan 58. The upgrade was financed with
the profit acquired from orders from Bung Karno (President Sukarno)
and nation guests for gifts on foreign visits. Other form of
acknowledgement towards Tjokrosuharto was the trust given to
start a pavilion in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah with various
crafts from Yogyakarta for several years since its opening in
1975. The people and local and national government still go
to Tjokrosuharto to shop for crafts and attributes for traditional
ceremonies. |

Although Mr. Tjokrosuharto died in
the age of 59 in 29 April 1965, and Mrs. Tjokrosuharto died
in 1986, Arts and Crafts Tjokrosuharto is continued by their
children. Today, the third generation is in charge of managing
and maintaining the enterprise after the three children of
Tjokrosuharto died. The generations to come will always try
to preserve and develop the values and tradition of the family
and nation.May the enterprise be able to develop in the hands
of the generations.

Enterprise
HistoryLike the tradition of Javanese facing marriage, Suyadi
and Masimah are given adult name by their family. It saw Tjokrosuharto.
The couple came from a slightly different background. The husband
came from Kotagede with the ability to produce silverworks and
the wife is originally from Panembahan, the location of the store,
is a descendant of Royal Servants masters of batik making. Marriage
did not only unite the two but also forming an enterprise without
excluding individual abilities. Starting with a house in the middle
of a neighborhood given by their parents, the two produced silverworks
and batik and tries to attract consumers to come and shop.Pakaryan
Perak dan Batik Tjokrosuharto (Arts and Crafts Tjokrosuharto)
in Panembahan 58 was established in the beginning of the 1930s.
Self naming the enterprise was a common practice at the time.
The address without mentioning the name of the street shows that
they start with a house in the middle of a neighborhood and is
still preserved. The original building of the store was then improved
as the additions of capital, skills, and creativity of the couple. |

The
opening of Jalan Panembahan Mangkurat (Panembahan Mangkurat
Street), which was an upgrade from a neighborhood alley, occurred
in 1941. It directly effected the development of the enterprise
because, then, it was accessible from two ways, north and west.
The 1940s was a hard moment for the whole nation because of
the Japanese repressive rule and the struggle of Indonesian
independence, until the legitimating of The Republic of Indonesia
by the Dutch. Nevertheless, the era can be passed by the cooperation
of the newborn nation of Indonesia. For Tjokrosuharto, partnership
with workers, suppliers, and consumers trusts at the time was
the most significant factor for the enterprise. Carefulness
and balance apparently able to achieve success although it was
not always go smoothly. In the coming of Serangan Oemoem 1 Maret
(1 March Attack of Yogyakarta), The Tjokrosuharto Store was
used as a place to kidnap a Dutch spy by the guerilla. Mr. Tjokrosuharto
(Suyudi) was arrested by the Dutch in Semarang for several months.
During imprisonment, information wanted by the Dutch about the
guerilla who kidnap the spy was not given by him although he
received many physical pressure which permanently affected his
health. He did it to maintain the existence of the enterprise
which at the time of the arrest was managed by his wife and
children to keep serving customers in need of souvenirs and
crafts. Besides being a source of income for the family, most
of the profit of the enterprise was donated to the guerilla.
This balance was done and maintained as a form of social responsibility.
Although there was no official recognition by the government
for what Mr. Tjokrosuharto did, as history shows, the existence
of Tjokrosuharto was in the attention of government and people.
It was showed in numerous forms such as the frequent visit of
nation’s guests of honors to the store to shop for souvenirs.
If these guests did not have the time to visit, then Tjokrosuharto
would be invited to bring the goods to Gedung Agung for the
guests to buy along with other enterprises. This condition occurred
for a few decades although then was changed along with the growth
of competitors. |
